Becoming a Dad for the first time can be quite scary. Whilst you have 9 months to get used to the idea and prepare, the reality can come as quite a shock! TalkMum blogger Cath shares her top tips for coping in those first weeks.
Becoming a parent is a life changing event – you leave your house as a couple and return as a family. It can take some getting used to, especially if you are surviving on a small amount of sleep. So what can you do to make things go as smoothly as possible? From my experience, here’s my advice:
- Babies take up a lot of time in the first few days and will feed a lot. Cooking is going to be low on your partner’s priorities so being able to make a quick nutritious meal will gain Brownie points. A takeaway is also another good option!
- Take the baby out for a walk – once you have tried out every function on the pram a good idea is to take the baby out for half an hour. As long as they are wrapped up warm a baby will benefit from the fresh air and it gives Mum a break too. You also get the chance to show off the new pram (and baby too!)
- Stay positive – there are lots of hormones flying about in the early days and Mum needs lots of reassurance and cuddles too.
- Go to bed early. If baby is going to be up most of the night there is no point staying up to midnight to watch TV. If you go to bed early, you will get much more valuable rest (albeit broken sleep!).
- Help with housework. OK, we don’t expect you to clean the house from top to bottom but just getting the hoover out or having a quick tidy up will be a great help!
